We celebrate America today, with gratitude that everything worth celebrating today was secured for us by generations of brave young soldiers who gave everything they had, so we could have every good thing. There is no greater love. 🇺🇸🕊

I was in Washington DC a couple of months ago, walking through the WWII memorial and thinking about my grandfather when I took this photo with the columns of light reaching up to the heavens. He was still in his teens when we enlisted as a Marine. He fought at Iwo Jima with friends who never made it home. We remember them today.

The little boys find treasures too 🐸🐛🪵🪨. Yesterday the grandchild of some friends of ours wanted to pay for the pretty rock he found. He was so excited to get to take it home💕

Did you know the strawberry belongs to the genus Fragraria - part of the rose family 🌹?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Apples 🍎 and plums are also part of this family. The name Fragraria was, of course, derived from the Old Latin word for fragrant. We have three varieties of strawberries on the farm this year, and each has its own wonderful fragrance. The Chandlers remind me of strawberry candy while the Ruby Junes have lovely floral notes 🌺.

Happy #EarthDay2022 🌎 . Supporting local farming is a great way to celebrate 🍾. Eating local is good for our bodies and the environment. Here's 7 reasons why (inspired by our friends at UAB, link on my blog).

1) Locally grown food is fresher and tastes better: We love it when our customers tell us "that was the best ... I've ever had". It's not that we are doing anything magical. Fresh really does taste that much better.
2) It's seasonal: It can be hard standing in the middle of the grocery store trying to figure out what is in season locally and what has been stored or shipped in. Buying local makes it easy . (Hint: it's 🍓 season now. Come see us!!)
3) You are helping preserve farmland and green spaces in your community: Our 840-acre farm is in Shelby County Alabama. We are deeply committed to being good stewards of this precious resource. We maintain 20 acres of wetland to support migratory bird habitat using a weir system. It's just one of many ways we support local conservation.
4) It's safer: Less processing between the grower and your table means less risk of contamination.
5) There is more variety: We can plant what tastes great without having to limit ourselves to just varieties that ship well or have a large commercial market. Right now, you ca try 3 different varieties of 🍓🍓🍓’s on the farm.
6) Eating local strengthens our community: There is a sense of trust that comes from having a relationship with the people who grow (and eat) your food.
7) You are supporting your local economy: When local farmers support other local growers and suppliers this impact is multiplied. We love working with other local growers and makers. This summer, we plan to showcase even more of what local farming has to offer by working with other farmers in our area to offer meat, eggs, cheese and more!

One of the best things about having a strawberry farm? Having a freezer full of 🍓🍓🍓’s ready to pull out at the last minute when you realize it's #NationalPieDay 🥧 (or think of any other reason why you need a strawberry treat 😋🍰).

This reminded me of when Jess was little. We had a membership at the @bhamzoo 🐒🐘🐅 and would end our day by stopping at the sweetest little French bakery 🇫🇷 - I think it was called Rue de Provence. We would share a little strawberry tart with a sweet crust, almond paste, a pastry cream, and beautiful fresh strawberries on top. Anyone else remember those? Let me know if you have the recipe. It's definitely on my list to recreate!

It's been 26 years tonight since John and I had our first date 💕⏳⌛️. It's also the 26th anniversary of the first time I saw the farm. We had a lovely dinner at Cobb Lane in Birmingham and then John drove me out to the farm and told me ghost stories 👻. It was such a fun first date.

We spent this afternoon giving hay rides through the strawberry patch 🍓 for all the adorable Trunk or Treaters. It was good to take a break from planting 🌿. We are getting close to done! Headed home now to watch a little baseball, and maybe win a #worldseries ⚾️ #happyhalloween 🎃

We are winding down a busy week of planting 🍓with this beautiful and amazingly delicious charcuterie board Earlier today, I spent a fun hour with some colleagues socializing and assembling our boards, and I have been looking forward to sharing this with John ever since.

@Alicestable did an amazing job leading our online workshop. I'm definitely on the lookout for another one soon. And how absolutely adorable is my vintage spoon custom made for me by Katelyn @OldSouthStampCo? I 💕 the patina. She found the lovely vintage slotted serving spoon in the back for me is well.

The guys spent the day getting ready to 🌿 plant our spring 2022 strawberry crop 🍓🍓🍓(right where the rainbow ends), while I visited with the Pell City Rotary Club to share some highlights from our farm's 200 year history ⌛️⏳ - and talk about where the future is taking us (hint: there are definitely 🍓’s involved 😊). I really enjoyed meeting everyone and getting to share our farm story. We are so thankful to live in a community that supports local farming so much!

There is nothing like farm fresh eggs. I 💕 the beautiful range of colors they come in. Did you know, that all eggs start out white? The colors are created by pigments that attach to the shell when the eggs are laid - sort of like dying Easter eggs! 🐣🐰

The color of the shell doesn't have any impact on the nutritional value of the egg. That is based on the chicken's diet. If you can, buy local eggs or try raising your own.
